Western New York P-TECH recently held a virtual ceremony to induct its newest members into its chapter of the National Honor Society.
Eight students spanning six different school districts were bestowed the great honor, including Riley Diate and Scott Flick of Silver Creek; Felix Manzella and Tyler Mathews of Fredonia; Derek Milne of Gowanda; Carson Reger of Pine Valley; Xavier Warrior of Dunkirk; and Chris Wiltsie of Holland.
Tayler Appel, a Project Engineer at Exelco Newbrook in Silver Creek, served as the guest speaker and helped correlate how the NHS four pillars of success (Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character) translate in the real world.
“Leadership is not only about leading a specific project or task that you have been assigned, it is about every day leadership,” he said. “If a colleague is struggling with a machine or making mistakes, you don’t point fingers at them or ignore the problem, you must take your time to talk to them, learn about their struggles and lead them to success as a teammate. Even if you are not their lead man or supervisor, it is that every day leadership that builds a team environment creating a positive and productive culture.”
Members of the WNY P-TECH chapter of the National Honor Society will now join current members volunteering on a number of community service projects.

“Scholars, you, now more than ever, during this unprecedented time, have shown the commitment, dedication, persistence and adaptability to bring you to this milestone,” said Kevin Bourgoine, E2CCB Director of Workforce Development and Career and Technical Education. “This day, this milestone, marks the first of many important successes of the rest of your lives.”
P-TECH is an all-day program housed in a state-of-the-art facility located at 55 East Benton St., Dunkirk. Students enroll in P-TECH as ninth graders and follow one of two pathways in welding and mechanical technology with specializations in CADD or machine tool and earn an associate degree through Jamestown Community College with no out-of-pocket expense. Scholar athletes can participate in after-school clubs and sports for their home district and they can join the P-TECH National Honor Society, Student Council, or Dream It Do It Club. Participating school districts provide transportation to the program daily.
